UNIVERSAL DICTIONARY French and Latin containing the meaning - Lot 131
UNIVERSAL DICTIONARY French and Latin containing the meaning and definition of words in both languages. Paris, les libraires associés, 1771 8 vol. in-folio, marbled calf, spines decorated Last edition, the most complete of this famous dictionary. (Brunet II, 1426.) Published a little less than fifty years before Diderot and d'Alembert's Encyclopedia, the Universal Dictionary, known as Trévoux's Dictionary, was a milestone in the world of encyclopedic publishing. Discredited at the beginning because of its Jesuit origins, the text was later recognized for its importance in the history of French culture and language and especially for its influence on other European courts. Heir to Furetière's dictionary and rivaling the Académie Française's dictionary, it was accepted as a reference work. Even today, it is celebrated by specialists for its expression of the "fascination for a universal knowledge and by the ambition of an exhaustiveness claimed by the encyclopedism of the Enlightenment".
