Text from the President of the Hotchkiss Club, to whom we extend our thanks: A CAR IN TRULY EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION—a car that has been stored in a dry environment and received special care during its use. Its condition is absolutely remarkable. The green leather upholstery (period option) is perfect, with no tears or signs of wear. It requires only a simple cleaning to remove slight traces of moisture, as well as a preservation and conditioning treatment. The door panels and headliner are in an exceptional and remarkable original condition. The door seals have remained supple and are not cracked. The original paint, a black cellulose lacquer, requires only careful polishing and buffing. It still features the two green trim strips—matching the upholstery—on the body moldings. This is original paint that should be preserved for its authenticity and excellent condition. The interior fittings are complete—knobs, pulls, levers, etc.—with no damage whatsoever. The lacquered wood dashboard is free of cracks and is, likewise, in remarkable original condition. The chrome trim, headlights, door handles, and emblems are all present, showing only superficial oxidation that can be easily remedied with careful polishing. No modernizations have been made, thanks to the presence of the factory-installed turn signals. The engine compartment is complete, unmodified, and shows no signs of rust, attesting to careful storage away from moisture. THE HOTCHKISS ARTOIS 864 S49 AND 686 S49 SEDANS These models, launched in late 1948, were intended to serve as a transitional phase before the arrival of a new generation—codenamed “New Look”—expected in the early 1950s. That new generation would ultimately never see the light of day. The main changes involved the chassis, which featured independent front wheels suspended by coil springs and equipped with a stabilizer bar. Hydraulic brakes made their permanent debut, ensuring stability and efficiency. The parking brake was operated by a lever located under the dashboard. Side vents provided ventilation for the front seats. The body was very slightly redesigned, with a taller windshield, larger side windows, a new two-dial instrument panel, and front and rear turn signals. These models enjoyed considerable commercial success, with nearly 2,000 units produced in two years—more than two-thirds of which were four-cylinder versions, while the remaining third was equipped with the six-cylinder engine, whose hood was extended by 20 cm. It was the sturdy, status-symbol sedan of the immediate postwar period, consistently boasting exemplary build quality. The brand’s slogan, “Smooth at 100 km/h,” applies perfectly to the S49 lineup.
