HOTCHKISS-GRÉGOIRE, JAG Sedan, 1952 - Lot 23
HOTCHKISS-GRÉGOIRE, JAG Sedan, 1952 A rare four-door sedan with an aerodynamic body, in anthracite. Designed under the direction of engineer Jean-Albert Grégoire, this model featured a design that was particularly innovative for its time: a structure that made extensive use of aluminum, a 2,188 cm³ flat-four engine, front-wheel drive, and independent suspension on all four wheels. The body features streamlined lines, integrated front fenders, partially fairing-covered rear wheels, a large rear window, and chrome trim. The vertical chrome grille bears the Hotchkiss emblem. It also features the “HOTCHKISS GRÉGOIRE” monogram. Unveiled in its final version at the 1950 Paris Motor Show and then brought to market in 1951, the Hotchkiss-Grégoire was produced in very limited numbers. The Hotchkiss Club lists 247 cars, Aluminum body: Anthracite, four doors, red wheels Interior: orange and wood License plate: 423 FM 83 Mileage: 81,513 km (not guaranteed) Chassis/engine no.: 598 Fuel: Gasoline Power: 13 cv Vehicle Inspection: No First Registration: 1952 Date of Acquisition by Seller: N/A An iconic model by Jean-Albert Grégoire, produced in a very limited series. Text from the President of the Hotchkiss Club, to whom we extend our thanks: A rare Hotchkiss Grégoire, the 98th unit produced out of a total production run of 247 vehicles. Delivered new by Établissements Pommier, a Hotchkiss dealership in Paris, this car was likely used there until the 1960s. This Hotchkiss Grégoire is in fair condition, showing signs of use but providing an interesting foundation for a restoration project. Body and Exterior Components Its anthracite gray metallic paint color does not appear in the original Hotchkiss color chart. The vehicle was therefore likely repainted entirely, probably in the 1960s, in a color consistent with that period. The body panels appear sound overall. However, the paintwork will require a complete refinish, particularly due to blistering on the front hood and scuff marks on the right front fender. The grille and front bumper are in good condition. Additional turn signals were installed, likely in the 1960s, by drilling holes in the front bumper ends, slightly altering the original appearance. At the rear, additional orange turn signals have also been added by drilling holes in both fenders. The rear bumper has been modified using parts from a Peugeot 203. It shows slight deformation, and its end pieces are missing. The front doors have noticeable vertical play, particularly the driver’s door, but also the passenger’s. This issue, common on certain Hotchkiss models that have been exposed to moisture, will require reinforcing the door pillars and adjusting the door panels to ensure they close properly and securely. The rear doors do not exhibit this defect. Interior and Upholstery The interior is in fair condition. The front and rear seats have been covered with brown vinyl covers, likely installed in the 1960s. These covers, though well-preserved, differ from the original design. The interior hardware, including handles, cranks, and levers, is complete and in good overall condition. The dashboard, made of sheet metal painted to imitate wood, is in satisfactory condition, except for the right side, where the paint is heavily chipped. Some of the original pull tabs and controls have been replaced with aftermarket parts, likely during the 1960s. The original three-spoke steering wheel has been replaced with a more standard model, possibly from a Peugeot 203. The original steering wheels fitted to the Hotchkiss A
