HOTCHKISS 680 CABOURG – SEDAN 1937
This Hotchkiss 680 Cabourg is in remarkable condition for a pre-war automobile.
Its license plate number, “1943 AR 13,” suggests that it spent most of its life in the Bouches-du-Rhône region, likely stored in a dry environment.
As a result, its structural condition is outstanding. The doors show no play and close perfectly without needing to be lifted, attesting to the excellent preservation of the wooden frame.
Interior and Upholstery
The interior, upholstered in the original beige fabric, is in excellent condition. Only the seat cushion of the front right seat is slightly damaged. The headliner and door panels show no significant wear.
The original upholstery, made of high-quality fabric, is well worth preserving.
The interior fittings are complete and in excellent condition. The door handles, knobs, pull tabs, and various controls are all present. The chrome trim is perfectly preserved.
Only slight wear on the Rhodoid steering wheel is worth noting.
Body and Exterior Components
The body is complete and in excellent condition.
No visible signs of corrosion or bodywork repairs are evident on the fenders or door sills.
The bumpers are in very good condition and have retained their original chrome plating, although it is slightly tarnished.
The headlights, taillights, emblems, and door handles are complete and perfectly preserved.
This Cabourg has not undergone any major modifications or modernizations. Only “Jockey”-style side turn signals were added after the war to comply with changing regulations. Their installation blends harmoniously with the vehicle’s lines.
Painted dark blue, this car appears to have been repainted only once, likely in its original color. The current paint is in a condition that would allow for its preservation following careful polishing.
Historical Detail
The attentive observer will notice the faint mark left by a vertical bar that was once attached to the center of the grille.
This is likely the mark left by an accessory offered by Hotchkiss as early as 1938, intended to modernize the appearance of the front end of the 1937 models.
It is likely that the collector, the previous owner of this Cabourg sedan, removed this element in order to restore it to its original appearance.
Engine Compartment and Mechanics
The engine compartment is in a condition comparable to that of the body: particularly sound and apparently complete.
The electrical circuits and wiring harnesses are present, with no apparent missing parts, and the cables appear to have retained their flexibility.
The hydraulic braking system will require inspection and repair before any road use.
